Cowardly Fate vs Deadly Fate: Differences & Strategy

Cowardly Fate and Deadly Fate are two of the three essential "Fate" fragments in Path of Exile 2, each dropped by different bosses during the Trials of Chaos, a challenging 10-round endgame gauntlet. Both are key components required to unlock the Trialmaster fight, but they differ in terms of their bosses and the tactical challenges associated with obtaining them.

Cowardly Fate drops from Uxmal, the Beastlord, a powerful boss encountered on the 10th round of the Trials of Chaos. This boss fight is known for its debuff named after the fate itself, the Cowardly Fate debuff, which slows player movement and attack speed, making positioning and evasion critical. Uxmal’s mechanics often include summoning minions and creating hazardous environments to test player endurance and skill.

Deadly Fate, on the other hand, is obtained by defeating Bahlak, the Sky Seer, who also appears during the 10th round but in a different Trial run. Bahlak is known for his swift and deadly ranged attacks, and his fight demands quick reflexes and precise dodging. The Deadly Fate does not impose the movement-slowing debuff Cowardly Fate applies but brings its own challenge in managing high burst damage phases.

While both fates require that players complete all preceding rounds of the Trials of Chaos, the approach to each boss fight varies. For Cowardly Fate, builds focusing on sustained damage, good mobility despite the slowing debuff, and strong survivability are ideal. Players often prioritize defenses against minion mobs and area control. For Deadly Fate, agile builds capable of dodging and interrupting the Sky Seer’s ranged assaults excel, focusing on burst healing and high single-target damage.

Collecting both fates (along with Victorious Fate, dropped by a third boss) is required to unlock the door to the Trialmaster. Players often farm these fates through repeated Trials of Chaos runs, and choosing which fate to pursue can depend on build comfort and playstyle preferences. Understanding each boss’s mechanics ensures a more efficient and safer farming experience.

Cowardly Fate and Deadly Fate differ by the bosses they drop from—Uxmal and Bahlak respectively—and by the unique combat challenges those bosses present. Successful farming requires adapting strategies to these differences while completing the full Trials of Chaos to gather all necessary fates for the Trialmaster encounter.
